Scripture: Luke 2:41-48
Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. When he was 12 years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to their custom. After the festival was over, they were returning home, but the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t know it. Supposing that he was among their band of travelers, they journeyed on for a full day while looking for him among their family and friends. When they didn’t find Jesus, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple. He was sitting among the teachers, listening to them and putting questions to them. Everyone who heard him was amazed by his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were shocked.
Reflection
Not much is recorded about Jesus during his childhood. This is one of the few stories that the Bible includes. Perhaps the Gospel writers thought a story about Jesus doing chores wasn’t a compelling narrative. Perhaps these stories about his childhood were lost. When Jesus was growing up, did he heal people? Did Jesus ever misbehave? Did Jesus ever get an attitude with his parents as a teenager? These are some questions we probably will never know the answers to. But crucially, this text provides us with an insight on how others viewed Jesus, and what Jesus did in his early life. The text describes Jesus remaining in Jerusalem, and sitting amongst the most learned people in the Temple of Jerusalem, teaching them, asking them hard questions, and stunning people with his wisdom. This is a prelude of what his ministry will look like, asking questions, engaging in conversation, and discerning with the community.
We just celebrated Christmas this week, and it was clear that Jesus was present with us in the sanctuary. As we move into 2026, may we all take a leaf out of Jesus’s book, and take some time for reflection and conversation in community, and listen to each other. Honor each other’s voices. Treat everyone with the dignity that they deserve as a child of God. May we ask the hard questions, seek out answers, and move forward, together, in the Love of God.
